Pré-requis

Selon la version d'Android que vous utilisez, il faudra penser à activer
l'installation depuis des sources inconnues. Rechercher dans les paramètres
d'Android les termes "origine inconnue" ou "source inconnue" et activez
l'option.
Ceci est une sécurité qu'Android à mis en place pour éviter l'installation de
logiciels malveillants, cependant, via F-Droid, les logiciels libres proposés
sont audités par une communauté de développeurs et ne présentent pas de risques
pour votre appareil.

que vous recherchez. Une fois l'application trouvée, cliquez sur le bouton de
téléchargement à droite du nom de l'application.

l'autoriser comme source d'applications. Cochez "ne plus afficher" avant
d'accepter.

Il existe des logiciels permettant de s'y connecter sur n'importe quel type
d'appareil (ordinateur, smartphone, tablette, ...), avec n'importe quel système
d'exploitation (Windows, GNU/Linux, MacOS, Android, iPhone...).
Etant-donné que c'est un logiciel libre et décentralisé, rien ni personne ne
pourra jamais fermer le service. Si un fournisseur ferme, il suffira d'ouvrir un
compte chez un autre fournisseur.

version privée d'XMPP utilisant le numéro de téléphone comme identifiant.

en 2014. Comme beaucoup de startups, son modèle est basé sur la création d'un

Une fois la valeur de l'entreprise validée, elle est revendue à un "BigTech",
et vient rejoindre l'écosystème évoqué dans la section précédente. WhatsApp Inc.
à été revendue 16 milliards de dollars : les big techs n'hésitent pas à payer
très cher pour rattacher les startups à leur empire.
Les fonctionnalités rajoutées à WhatsApp après son rachat par Meta ne sont que
des manières supplémentaires de garder l'audience acquise dans la bulle de
surveillance créée :
- Paiement en ligne (entre autre avec la cryptomonnaie privée de Meta)
- Géo-Localisation
- Intégration avec Instagram-Direct et FB Messenger (propriétés de Meta)
- Création de WhatsApp Business (offre pour entreprises)
- Intégration des LLMs pour analyser les messages et enrichir les modèles IA de
Meta
Les logiciels libres utilisant XMPP ne permettront probablement jamais d'utiliser ces
fonctionnalités là, et Meta ne laissera sûrement plus jamais les comptes XMPP
hors-WhatsApp communiquer avec eux, malgré les obligations demandées par l'UE
via le Digital Market Act (DMA).
Moralité : Si vous souhaitez conservez vos usages avec WhatsApp, restez-y. Si
vous souhaitez avoir une pratique numérique plus consciente des impacts des
BigTech et de la surveillance de masse, désinstallez-le, suivez ce guide, et passez le mot.

Créer un compte XMPP
--------------------
Si vous souhaitez directement passer à l'installation et à la création de
compte, descendez à la section `créer son compte sur conversations`_.
Contrairement à WhatsApp, votre numéro de téléphone n'est pas nécessaire pour
créer un compte sur XMPP.
Tout ce qu'il vous faut c'est :
- Un serveur permettant l'inscription de nouveaux membres
- Un pseudo disonible sur ce serveur
- Un mot de passe
Le serveur, ou fournisseur, est l'équivalent du site que vous choisissez lorsque
vous créez une adresse e-mail: vous hériterez du nom de domaine (la partie
qui finit en .fr, .net, .com, ...) de celui-ci.
Vous serez aussi obligé de respecter leur charte d'utilisation et le prix
d'abonnement s'il y en a un. La majorité des fournisseurs sont gratuits.

Voici une sélection de serveurs ayant leurs inscriptions ouvertes :
- chapril.org_ : Serveur hébergé par l'APRIL_, association Française de défence et
de promotion des logiciels libres (localisé en France)
- jabberfr.org_ : Serveur hébergé par la communauté francophone des utilisateurs
de Jabber (localisé en France)
- conversations.im_ : Serveur hébergé par le développeur de l'application mobile
pour Android "Conversations" (localisé en Allemagne)
Une liste non-exhaustive de serveurs XMPP disponible à l'adresse providers.xmpp.net_.
Les fournisseurs d'adresse XMPP sont souvent très accessibles et apportent un
support humain lorsque vous rencontrez des difficultés à l'usage de leurs
services.
Contrairement aux services des GAFAM, où avoir un autre être humain au bout du
fil est tout simplement impossible pour le commun des mortels.
Deux possibilités pour créer son compte :
- passer directement par une application XMPP sur smartphone ou sur ordinateur
(exemple : pour chapril.org ou conversations.im )
- se connecter sur le site internet du fournisseur via un navigateur web
(exemple : pour jabberfr.org)
Vous pourrez ensuite vous connecter en utilisant le logiciel de votre choix,
selon l'appareil que vous utilisez. Attention par contre lorsque vous êtes
connectés sur deux appareils en même temps qu'un message n'arrive pas uniquement
sur un des deux appareils.

Sur un appareil Android vous pouvez installer des applications de plusieurs
manières. Vous pouvez utiliser la manière supportée par Google, en utilisant le
"Play Store", qui propose des applications payantes ou à publicité, et quelques
logiciels libres. Les développeurs de logiciels libres se sont souvent plaints
de la difficulté à diffuser leur travail via cet outil. Ils ont donc pris
l'initiative de proposer un outil alternatif : F-Droid.

`Installer F-Droid`_. L'exemple présent indique comment installer l'application
"Conversations" qui est un client XMPP pour Android.
Si vous souhaitez installer Conversations via le Play Store, c'est aussi
possible. Installer la comme les autres applications Play Store.

Lors du premier lancement de l'applications "Conversations", un écran vous
demandera si vous souhaitez utiliser un compte déjà existant où si vous
souhaitez vous enregistrer auprès d'un fournisseur.

Cliquer sur créer un nouveau compte
Avant l'écran de création de nouveau compte, on vous demande si vous souhaitez
utiliser le serveur "conversations.im" ou bien un autre. Vous pouvez choisir
celui que vous voudrez parmi la liste proposée dans la `sélection de serveurs`_,
_dans cet exemple, j'utiliserai le serveur "chapril.org", je clique
donc sur "utiliser votre propre fournisseur".

Choisir "conversations.im" ou un autre fournisseur
Sur l'écran de création de compte, entrez le pseudo que vous désirez et le nom
de domaine du serveur à utiliser, par exemple si je choisis chapril.org : maxime_demo@chapril.org .
Entrez ensuite le mot de passe de votre choix et
cliquez sur le bouton en bas à droite. Un challenge "anti-robot" vous sera
affiché, lisez bien les instructions pour le valider.

Android vous demandera ensuite si vous souhaitez désactiver la restriction
d'économiseur de batterie. Si vous souhaitez utiliser l'application Conversations
quotidiennement, je vous conseille de cocher "Pas de restriction". En ce qui
concerne l'utilisation de la batterie, sans tous les mécanismes de surveillances
des applications propriétaires habituelles, vous ne constaterez pas de
surconsommation de la batterie en utilisant cette application.

Vous êtes désormais connecté. Envoyez l'adresse que vous avez créé à vos
amis utilisant XMPP et ils pourront vous rajouter dans leur liste de contacts.
En cliquant sur "lancer une discussion", vous pourrez rajouter les adresses de
vos amis et vous connecter à des discussions de groupes.
